Understanding “Show Shock” and How to Cope Up

They say that acting is mostly talent and practice with a little bit of luck. Actors are actually considered influencers these days together with their director/producer like Logan Sekulow. This is because they can be seen and heard on television, movie houses, theater, Internet, and podcasts.

The portrayals of characters have impacted history or pop culture. However, after the portrayals, no one really knows what the actors are going through. What is “show shock”?

Although not a medical disorder, “show shock” refers to a condition of the actors who have finally let go of a character, company and shared experiences. Actors who suffered a major setback after the film describe it as a range of emotions that include sadness, loneliness, anxiety, and loss of self-esteem. While there are others who find it hard to manage daily activities that lead to loss of appetite, insomnia, and fatigue.

Acknowledge

Participating in any production is a consuming experience in the sense that you will develop daily routines and habits. You will even forge a bond with your castmates and before you know it, you rely on them for emotional support. After the show, you will make adjustments. With this, you need to acknowledge that whatever you are feeling is a normal reaction to the transition. The first step to healing is acknowledging that the adjustment is normal and there is no set amount of time to process the loss.

Reconnect

If you are feeling negative, there is no harm in asking for help. This is the time that you reconnect with your family and friends. It is helpful to reconnect and discuss your fears, worries, and behaviors. Having someone can give new interpretations and perspective that you need to move on.

Retune

The third thing to do is to retune or reset. Reset means adjusting the brain and the nervous system. Fortunately, it is attainable with the help of diaphragmatic breathing. Whenever you are feeling tensed or anxious, you just put one hand on your chest and the other underneath your belly button then start breathing slowly but deeply for 5 to 10 minutes. This will surely improve the oxygen flow to your brain.

Rejuvenate

The last step is to rejuvenate. This means giving time to practice self-care. The best thing to do is to maintain a healthy diet and establish normal sleeping patterns. If you are waiting for projects, spend extra time on regular exercise. These things will help you deal with stress positively. Do not neglect yourself by getting drunk or overeating. Find the strength to change your lifestyle even if it is overwhelming. The prudent thing to do is to tackle the changes one at a time.
